The vineyards were established in 1972 by Cleo and Ralph Devoto with two varieties, riesling and cabernet sauvignon, on their own roots since phylloxera did not exist in Lake County at that time. In the 1970s grapes were sold to various wineries, most notably Fetzer which won gold medals for both varieties at the Los Angeles County Fair. In 1979 the vineyards passed to Steve Devoto. When phylloxera reached Lake County in the 1980s the vineyards were replanted on resistant root stocks with a vertically shoot positioned canopy. Additional vineyards were subsequently established at the Bell Hill and Smith locations. Current varieties include riesling, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc and musqué, melon de Bourgogne, viognier and aligoté.
